The South African Night Life Experience

When visiting major cities in South Africa you can expect a night life experience similar to that of London, New York or Ireland, except with that diverse South African twist.  Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria, Bloemfontein and Durban each have a number of upmarket restaurants, bars, clubs and even shebeens that will cater to your night life needs.

All cities in South Africa, big or small, has its gems for experiencing an exciting night filled with laughter, entertainment and excellent food and drinks. For the purpose of this article we will just focus on a few.
When travelling to Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Bloemfontein or Durban, be sure to explore some of the following amusing streets, suburbs and locations fit for socialising, great food and cocktails after the sun sets.


•    Soweto: For a traditional African experience with live music, African cuisine and a whole lot of fun, visit Soweto.
•    Melville (7th Street): If you are in the mood for cocktails, live music and a late night enjoying vibrant Joburg, Melville is the place.
•    Newtown: For museums, theatres, excellent food, Jazz and all things different and artistic, experience a night in Newtown.
•    Greenside (Gleneagles Road): You’ll find a number of vibey restaurants for after-work dinner and drinks as well as unique bars with live music that stay open until late at night.

•    Hatfield Square: Here you will find a number of restaurants, clubs and bars with a party vibe that lasts well into the next morning. It is also more commonly visited by 18-22 year olds as the Pretoria University campus and dorms are located nearby.
•    Brooklyn: Located near Hatfield, but for an aged 23 year + atmosphere Brooklyn offers a more upmarket night life.

Cape Town
•    Long Street: Experience anything from live jazz to alternative clubbing in this popular street in Cape Town.
•    Clifton or Camps Bay: Bars and restaurants are located near the beach with excellent views. The perfect location to enjoy that sundowner, make your choice of restaurant for dinner and bar hob the rest of the evening.
•    V&A Waterfront: For a selection of restaurants, casinos, bars and clubs located in a picturesque surrounding.

Westdene: Bloemfontein, like Potchefstroom and Stellenbosch are the home of large universities and these towns are packed with great places to go any time of the day. In Westdene you will find a cluster of unique restaurants and bars as well as a theatre.

Beachfront: Excellent views, dancing, great food and a variety of cuisine to be enjoyed amongst people of mixed ages and cultures.

Remember to take a taxi or assign a designated driver when you are planning to drink at all. The plus side of getting a taxi is that your taxi driver will also be able to recommend the best spots in your area; you don’t need to worry about directions or struggle with parking either.
